In this rural Ugandan community, safe water has long been scarce. With no rivers or springs, little groundwater, and long dry seasons, the lack of water has kept families trapped in poverty.
HEED is working to change that. With support from Cross International and Living Water International, we’re planning a comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) system to bring sustainable water for drinking, washing, and agriculture to five villages.
So far, we’ve drilled two deep wells, built a 450,000-gallon reservoir that collects water run-off from surrounding hills, and installed rainwater catchment systems on all our buildings that collect in storage tanks to be pumped to elevated tanks and distribution taps. Schools and the clinic have new water purification systems and now have clean, purified water for the first time for clean water in the area-ever. The next goal is to achieve this for the communities we serve.
To improve sanitation, we’ve created community leadership teams who have built latrines, installed handwashing stations, and provide ongoing hygiene training. These efforts have reduced open defecation by 90%, transforming health and daily life in the community.
An adequate water supply, and improved sanitation and hygiene have been a challenging long-term project for HEED. Join us in impacting lives in this meaningful way!
Water is pumped to several elevated tanks from the wells and rainwater harvesting tanks for distrubution.
